Today, April 27th, marks the Feast Day for St. Zita. She was a remarkable woman who lived in the 13th century in Lucca, Italy. Born into a poor family, she demonstrated an early piety and diligence that would define her life. At the young age of 12, Zita entered the service of the wealthy Fatinelli family, where she would face years of mistreatment and abuse from her fellow servants.
Despite the constant ill-treatment, Zita remained steadfast in her faith and commitment to her work. She viewed her domestic duties as serving God, not just her employers, and she would often secretly give alms to the poor from the Fatinelli's resources. Zita's meekness, humility, and love for those who wronged her eventually won over her accusers, and she was placed in charge of all the affairs of the household.
Even in a position of authority, Zita remained generous and kind, excusing the faults of the other servants to their employers. Her deep devotion to God and the Blessed Mother was evident in her life, and she was said to experience ecstasies and visions. After her death in 1271, numerous miracles were reported through Zita's intercession, leading to her veneration as a saint in the region around Lucca.
One of the most famous miracles associated with St. Zita occurred during her lifetime. It is said that one day, as Zita was hurrying to church to attend Mass, she was stopped by her employer and ordered to stay behind and tend the oven. Unwilling to miss Mass, Zita placed her apron over the oven and, to the amazement of all, the bread continued baking perfectly in her absence. This miraculous event demonstrated Zita's deep faith and the favor she found with God, who rewarded her devotion. Another is depicted in the painting above. It concerns Zita carrying bread in her cloak to bring to the poor. Jealous servants reported this to the master, who confronted Zita. Upon opening the cloak, it was found to be full of flowers, and not the bread she was accused of taking
The life and miracles of St. Zita serve as an inspiring example of holiness through humble service. Despite the trials and tribulations she faced, Zita remained steadfast in her love for God and her fellow man. Her miraculous intercession after death further attests to the power of her virtuous life and her continued care for those who invoke her aid. St. Zita stands as a model of patience, charity, and unwavering faith - a true saint for domestic workers and all who strive to serve God in their daily lives.
St. Zita, pray for us.
